What is OPAL:
OPAL is a web based application for the purpose of issuing permits on behalf of the Department of the Environment in Belize. These permits are used for the import or export of scrap metal, used tires, lead acid batteries, ODS/halogenated gases, refrigeration/air conditioning equipments and petroleum products.
Guidelines on “how to apply for a commodity (Scrap Metal, Restricted Products, Refrigerants, etc) permit from the Department of the Environment”:
If you are a first-time applicant:
- Visit the website opal.doe.gov.bz
- Go to the “Register” option and apply for an account.
- Await approval/disapproval of account.
- Account approved: applicant is sent an email with a username and a separate email with a one-time password.
- Proceed to “log in”: Applicant will be prompted to update the password.
- Account Disapproved: Applicant is sent an email stating that the account was denied.
Applying for a permit:
- Visit the website opal.doe.gov.bz
- Log in to account: Upon entering credentials, the applicant is sent a verification code (sent to the email and phone number on account) to enter to log in.
- Once logged in, choose the option ‘Apply for a license’, then select commodity. Next, fill out the application and Submit. Lastly, await approval/disapproval of application in two (2) business days.
- Application approved: Applicant is sent an email. To download the application, go to “View status of your applications” then “Approved Applications” and select application. Finally, go to the attachments to download.
- Application disapproved: Applicant is sent an email stating that the application was denied. To view why it was denied go to “View status of your applications” then “Denied Applications”. Choose the denied application and then scroll to the bottom to view comments.
