BELIZE JOINS GLOBAL EFFORTS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE

Belmopan City, Belize.
October 6, 2023.

Belize takes a significant step towards combatting climate change by formally acceding to the Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol. The Kigali Amendment focuses on phasing down the production and consumption of the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are potent greenhouse gases widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and other applications.

“As a nation, Belize recognizes the urgency of addressing climate change and its far-reaching consequences by transitioning to more climate friendly alternatives. By acceding to the Kigali Amendment, we take a significant step towards reducing the impact of greenhouse gases on our environment. This decision reflects Belize’s commitment to global environmental efforts and demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding the planet for a sustainable future” said Chief Environmental Officer, Anthony Mai.

Key Points Regarding Belize’s Kigali Amendment Accession:

  • Environmental Impact: By reducing the use of HFCs, Belize is contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which is crucial in achieving global climate targets.
  • Technological Transition: The Kigali Amendment promotes the adoption of climate-friendly alternatives to HFCs, such as low-global warming potential refrigerants, which can also result in more energy-efficient technologies.
  • Global Cooperation: Belize’s accession demonstrates its commitment to international cooperation and partnerships in addressing climate change, as the Kigali Amendment is a globally recognized and accepted framework.
  • Economic Opportunities: Transitioning to environmentally friendly technologies and practices can open up new economic opportunities, stimulate innovation, and create green jobs.
  • Sustainable Development: Belize’s move aligns with its broader goals of sustainable development and environmental protection, which are essential for the well-being of present and future generations.

Belize’s accession to the Kigali Amendment is a testament to its proactive approach in combating climate change. This move aligns with Belize’s broader environmental goals and serves as an example for nations worldwide to prioritize sustainable practices.
